Safford, Mrs. D.L. (1839 - DEC 1901)

Mrs. D.L. Safford, aged 62 years, died yesterday morning at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. R.G. Malcom, 627 West Second St., dropsy being the cause. The funeral will be held at the house this afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. S.P. Long officiating. The interment will take place at Park Hill Cemetery. (Duluth News Tribune)

Mrs. Safford was an old Clark Co. settler, having moved to Wis. from Ohio immediately after the war, first living at Mauston, then at B.R. Falls, then at Neillsville, or rather the old stopping place at Staffordville. Her husband ran the poor farm for several years, finally settling on their place in the town of York, from which place they moved to Neillsville in 1884. Mrs. Safford, who was an intense sufferer from rheumatism had to give up housekeeping and reside with her children. She has two daughters, Mrs. C.F. Trogner, now an employee in the Government printing office in Washington D.C. and Mrs. R.G. Malcolm of Duluth, where she passed away. She was a good Christian and in her last hour of suffering faintly said, "precious promise, God has given to the weary passer by," and to her it was weary and she sought rest, blessed rest. It was a great sorrow to her that she could not go instead of the little granddaughter, daughter of Mrs. Malcolm, who preceded her by about six weeks.
