Kubat, John (1834 - 1 MAY 1899)

John Kubat, a farmer living five miles northeast of this city (Neillsville, Clark County), was stamped and gored to death by an enraged bull near his home, last Monday afternoon. Details of the fatality are meager, no one having been a witness to the terrible accident, but indications are that the victim fought long and desperately for his life. The body was not discovered until eleven o'clock Tuesday morning, when a searching party found the remains lying beside a log at the edged of the woods eighty rods distant from the house. The family first missed Mr. Kubat at supper time, Monday evening, and a search for him was immediately commenced and continued until midnight. In the morning the three sons and other members of the family again took up the task of locating their father, with the result as above mentioned. The body was horribly bruised, particularly on the head and chest, and from the position in which it was found, it is presumed that the victim had attempted to protect himself behind a tree, the ground thereabouts being heavily tracking and torn up.

The bull was not considered a vicious animal, but within the last week had exhibited evidences of a violent nature.

Mr. Kubat was a man 65 years old, having been born in Bohemia in 1834. He came to this country with his wife and children in 1870, locating in Washington County. In 1883 he removed to Clark County, settling in the town of York, where he has since resided. His wife, six sons and one daughter survive him, three sons now being at home on the farm. Funeral services took place from the Catholic Church in this city at ten o'clock this morning and the remains were interred in the Catholic Cemetery.
