News: Greenwood (8 FEB 1881)
CLARK COUNTY PRESS ACCOUNT OF GREENWOOD, WI 8 FEB 1881 Very quiet in town during the past week, and locals about “as scarce as hen’s teeth.” Hon. N. H. Withee passed through town today on his way to Hemlock. Mrs. Eaton has been on the sick list for some time, but is reported by Dr. Thomas as convalescent. Weston & Schofield have their new safe (from Hall’s Lock and Safe Co.) now in position. This isa very fine safe, weighing 7,500 pounds. We notice by the same firm in a new office in the rear end of their store. The quarterly meeting service at the M. E. Church Last Sunday was well attended, the pastor conducting the services, preaching morning and evening. The weather has undergone considerable change during the last day or two. Mr. Levi Withee, our fellow townsman, says that the thaw is just the thin needed and will make logging easy. Mr. Bailey, our village undertaker has lately received large stock of furniture and undertaker’s goods which he says he will sell very cheap. The new bridge between this town and Warner is being rapidly pushed forward to completion by S. M. Andrews, the contractor. The pastor of the M. E. Church says that the subscription to cancel the church debt is prospering finely, and soon the church will be free of debt. This news will be hailed with joy by every citizen. It will be a day of jubilee when the church for the first time in its history will stand free of debt . Let everyone contribute so that this glorious result may soon be reached. |
