Short, George (7 JAN 1841 – 2 AUG 1908)

George Short, an old and respected resident of this county (Clark), died at his home in the town of Washburn Monday Aug. 2, 1908.

He is survived by his widow and two daughters, Mrs. George Bue and Mrs. William Meddaugh, both of the town of Washburn, also four brothers, James, Andrew and John of the town of Washburn and William who resides at Ft. Atkinson, Wis.

Funeral services were held at the Shortville Church Wednesday, Rev. W.T. Hendren of Greenwood officiating.

Deceased was born in St. Lawrence Co., N.Y., Jan. 7, 1841, and came with his parents to Jefferson Co., Wis., when a child. With his cousin and two brothers he enlisted and served in the Civil War. The cousin was killed by the three brothers served to the end of the war.

He married Miss Alice Kershaw at Whitewater, Wis., March 15, 1870. He and his family came to Clark County 36 years ago and settled in the part of the town of Washburn known as Shortville, named after the Short family. He lived to see the wilderness into which he moved, transformed into a country of beautiful homes and productive farms. He took an active part in the development of that part of the country and became one of its foremost and respected citizens. He will be sadly missed in his neighborhood as well as in this city, where he was well known and highly esteemed as an upright honest man – “the noblest work of God.”
