Reed, Mary A. (12 AUG 1861 – 11 NOV 1908)

Mrs. Mary A. Reed, wife of James Reed, whose death at their home in Washburn, Clark County Nov. 11, 1908 was recorded in a previous issue was born in England, Aug. 12, 1861. She came to America with her parents when a child two years old. Her mother died in New York shortly after landing and she was taken by her grandfather, who brought her up at his home in Rosendale, Wis. She was married to James Reed March 27, 1884. They lived at Rosendale till about eight years ago, when they moved to their farm in the town of Washburn. For sever years her health had been very poor, in fact most of the time she was practically an invalid. She was apparently however, somewhat on the gain until the sudden death of their son Jesse, a young man of rare intelligence and good character, who was the pride and joy of his mother’s heart. She brooded continually over his death, her grief preying upon her health and her mind until sch became very melancholy, all of which led to her death. Mr. Reed had sold his farm and was about to move in hopes that a change of scene would bring his wife back to health, her death occurring just a few days before the time set for moving away.

When in health and strength she was a lady of the highest neighborly and social qualities, a kind and loving wife and mother. She was of a nervous temperament and ill health and grief bore down upon her with a heavy hand. Only those who have suffered as she suffered can sympathize with her and only He who knows the weaknesses and frailties of humanity can justly judge her in life and death.

Besides her husband she leaves one daughter, Ethel, a bright young girl of twelve. To them is offered the community’s sympathy.
