Cannon, Charles Deatz (5 AUG 1870 – 20 NOV 1909)

Charles Deatz Cannon died at Elk Mound, Wis., Nov. 20, 1909, at the home of his wife’s father Mr. George Steiner, where he had been since his arrival from the west a few weeks ago. He was born at Plainfield, Wis., Aug. 5, 1870. His parents moved to Clark County when he was a year old and lived in the town of Washburn, moving to Neillsville when Deatz was fourteen. He attended school here, later studied telegraphy, and got a position on the Omaha road, his first station being Columbia. He became an expert operator and was stationed at Elk Mound for some time. Here he was married Oct. 30, 1904 to Esther Steiner, who with their little son Newton, three years old, survives him. Three years ago he was taken with hemorrhage of the lungs and went west in hopes of recovering his health, getting a station on the Northern Pacific in the state of Washington. His health continued to grow worse and although he made a gallant struggle for life, stating at his post long after his strength would warrant it, he finally had to give up his work, and a short time ago was brought back to Elk Mound by his wife, who had bravely helped him as long as he was at work and took care of him when he had to give up, until seeing that his days were almost numbered she brought him home.

Deatz was as a boy and man, quiet and unobtrusive, devoting himself with persistence to his chosen work. He was honest and trustworthy, self-sacrificing, and under the most trying circumstances was brave and uncomplaining. Besides his wife and child he leaves two sisters, Mabel and Lida Cannon of this city. His remains were brought here for burial Monday afternoon, Rev. N.F. Chapman officiating. The out of town people attending the funeral were Mr. George Steiner, father of Mrs. Cannon, Wm. Steiner her uncle, Wm. and Herbert Steiner, her brothers, all of Elk Mound.
