Dore, John S. (26 DEC 1836 – SEP 1914)

Through newspaper clippings sent to H.M. Root comes the news of the death of John S. Dore, for many years a prominent citizen of Clark County.

He was born at Harmony, Maine, Dec. 26, 1936, and came with his father to Wisconsin in 1850. He began teaching school at the age of 18 years and afterwards studied one year at Galesville University. He was married at La Crosse Jan. 1, 1868 to Miss Jennie L. Angell and soon after came to Neillsville and established the Clark County Journal, which he published for several years. He took an active part in local politics, was chairman of the County Board, and County Superintendent of Schools for the term of ten years. He was also a member of the State Board of Agriculture for three years. After selling his paper he moved out on his farm later known as the Youmans farm on Pleasant Ridge and developed it. He also went into the lumber business, but that proved a failure, and broken in health and finances he moved to Fresno, Cal. About thirty-one years ago. There he engaged in fruit raising, becoming one of the leading vineyardist of central California. He took an active part there in public life. He leaves his wife and four daughters: Mrs. J.J. Ewell, Phoenix, Ariz.; Mrs. Geo. Hobbs, Dinuba; Mrs. Harry Joseph, Mrs. H.V. Rudy, and Miss Jennie Dore of Fresno.
