Barkley, William H. (13 SEP 1902 - 27 AUG 1921)

After an illness of but a short duration, Will Barkley died in the hospital at Eau Claire Saturday, where he was taken the evening before for treatment. He had not been feeling well for a couple of days previous, but the illness did not reach an acute stage until Friday afternoon, when Dr. Harper was called. The doctor called Dr. Schwarz in consultation, and they prepared the patient for removal to the hospital.

Mrs. Barkley and family had returned Wednesday evening before from an auto trip to Hazelhurst and Merrill, Will driving the car. He was apparently tired out, but did not complain. The next day he was worse, not remaining in his bed, and that evening drove to Fairchild and return. Although suffering much pain he was cheerful throughout his last illness, passing peacefully away. His mother was at his bedside in the hospital when the final summons came.

The remains were brought to the village Saturday night and taken to his home to await the time of burial.

William Henry, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Barkley, was born at Warrens, Sept. 13, 1902, and died at the Luther Hospital in Eau Claire at about eight o'clock on Saturday morning, Aug. 27, 1921, aged 18 years, 11 months and 14 days. He leaves to mourn his untimely taking away, his heartbroken parents, four brothers and three sisters, besides a host of friends among the young people of the community (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.). He was a graduate of the Humbird High School, being a member of the class of 1920.

The funeral services were held at the home on Tuesday afternoon, and were attended by a large congregation. Rev. J. W. Kendall officiated. Many beautiful floral wreaths and emblems were placed on the casket, loving tributes from classmates, alumni, and friends. The burial was in the Mentor Cemetery.
