Horel, Isaac (10 Feb 1831 - 7 DEC 1921)

Isaac Horel died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. Washburn, Wednesday night at about 10:30 o'clock. Although he had been in feeble health for some time, the end came suddenly. Mr. Horel was nearly 91 years of age. His wife died fourteen years ago, and since then he has made his home with his daughter. Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock.

Isaac Horel, son of Isaac and Betsey Horel, was born in Somersetshire, England, Feb. 10, 1831, the youngest one of eight children. He came to the U. S. with his parents in 1834, and settled near Syracuse, N.Y., where the father died. Subsequently the mother moved to Merton, Waukesha Co., Wis., where the family resided for several years. In 1856 they came with ox teams to Clark County, and located on a quarter section of land three miles west of Humbird, Clark County, Wis., being the third family to settle in this vicinity.

He and his brothers continued on this homestead for awhile and then moved on the land which is now one of the best farms in the eastern part of the town of Cleveland, Jackson Co.

He was united in marriage with Elizabeth Howard in 1856. Three children were born to them, a son dying in infancy, and a daughter, Mary Jane Wilson, in March 1907. He resided on his farm until the death of his wife on Dec. 28, 1907, wince which time he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. E. Washburn, until his death after but a short illness, Wednesday night, Dec. 7, 1921. He is survived by his daughter, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, besides many relatives and friends.

The funeral was held at the M. E. Church last Saturday afternoon, and was attended by a large congregation to pay the last tribute of respect to the deceased pioneer. Rev. A. J. Coram preached the funeral sermon. Burial was in the family lot in the Mentor Cemetery.

Isaac Horel was a man of sterling worth and character, ever keeping before him the highest ideals of faithfulness and loyalty in all friendships and business transactions. Until the infirmities of age prevented, he was a regular attendant of the Methodist Church. He was always keenly interested in all the political and civil news of the day, up to the time of his death, and his friends considered the interesting way in which he conversed upon all subjects as most remarkable for one of his years. He had always followed the occupation of farming and had led an active life. He enjoyed the society of both young and old, and his home was the scene of many pleasant gatherings in the pioneer days.
