Mildred L. Hicks

Our mother, grandmother, and friend Mildred L. Hicks, age 84, of Neillsville, went to meet her heavenly father on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004. The remainder of her days were spent enjoying time with family and friends. After a brief and painless illness, she died at Memorial Nursing Home where she had resided for the past four months.

Mildred was born on June 14, 1919 in Greensboro, North Carolina to Hubert and Corrina (Bradsher) McAdams. She was educated in Durham, North Carolina, and worked at Wrights Machinery during WW II. On March 7, 1936, she was united in marriage to James V. Hicks. He died on Aug. 13, 1996. Mildred made the community of Neillsville her home in 1959. She was employed by Auto Test, Schultz Brothers Dime Store, and Nelson Filter. She was a volunteer driver for Social Services for 20 years and also enjoyed selling Avon for 14 years.

Mildred lived her life in awe of her Creator and courageously shared her faith with everyone God brought into her life. She was a former member of the Assembly of God Church. In more recent years, she had become instrumental as "social director" for Young at Heart group and many other small group activities at Living Hope Evangelical Free Church. Her honest determination and outgoing personality touched countless lives.

Surviving are her daughters, Vickie Hicks Grap, of Neillsville, and Nancy Hicks Schaeffer of Newport News, Virginia; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mildred were held Monday, Feb. 9, at Living Hope Evangelical Free Church. Pastor Steve Wentz officiated. Music was provided by Kathy Meshnick, piano, and Carol Glaze and Dave Skiff, soloists. Mildred was laid to rest in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mildred's grandsons and two special friends.

Buchanan Funeral Home, Neillsville, handled the arrangements.
