Karl F. Schwantes, 78, Anchorage, Alaska, died on Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Providence Extended Care Center, Anchorage. A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. on Monday, July 24, at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Anchorage. His ashes will be scattered at his home near Spencer.

Karl Frank Schwantes was born on Nov. 11, 1923, in Spencer to George and Louise Schwantes. He graduated from Spencer High School. He served in U.S. Army during World War ll, from March 11, 1943, until Oct. 8, 1945. He was a member of the 1st Bomb Division in the European-African Theatre. He was honorably discharged with the rank of stall sergeant and decorated with the DFC, European Eastern Campaign Medal and three air medals. He moved to Alaska in 1959 and began working for the FAA. He retired in 1981. He was a life member of the American Legion and the VFW, a member of the 40 et 8, and a life member of the Elks, Moose Lodge and Chicken Club of Alaska. His interests included fishing, gardening, western movies and John Wayne.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel, Anchorage; two sisters, Vi Lien, Wisconsin, and Carolyn Melim, Illinois; two brothers, Frank Schwantes, Washington, and Bill Schwantes, Wisconsin; four sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and five brothers, George Jr., Donald, Leonard, Elmer and John.

The Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Anchorage, assisted the family with arrangements.
