10 YEARS AGO December 10, 1992 Stanley Gift and Craft, operated by Donna and Howie Markham, recently opened at 123 1/2 N. Broadway St. The shop features gifts, crafts, country and Amish furniture and quilts.

Stanley's former acting police chief, Charles Ziel, has filed a lawsuit against the city and six council members over their decision not to hire him after his probationary period was done.

50 YEARA AGO December 11, 1952 The Rebakah Lodge held its regular annual meeting, with the election of officers. Those elected were Nora Higholt, noble grand; Olive Robinson, vice grand; Edna Ott, secretary; Ottilie Moldenhauer, treasurer; Esther Brown, deputy; and Eunice Muenzel, trustee for three years.

60 YEARS AGO December 11, 1942 The radio reports from the Far East state that Sgt Caroll Booth, 21, of Stanley, was wounded by a Japanese sniper while attacking a fortification at Buna on Dec. 5. Booth was taken to a field hospital and was reported to be in good condition. He was struck while crossing a Japanese landing field.

Moscow dispatches of Dec. 1 indicate that the Russians are spreading destruction among the Germans on the Stalingrad front. Evidence is not lacking that the morale of the German troops is being broken despite the shouting of Hitler that they are on the way to victory. Dead troopers found on the field and captured German prisoners indicate that the German troops are poorly clothed and poorly fed and murmurs of discontent are heard among the prisoners taken from the Germans.

While some of Uncle Sam's fighting men enjoyed good Thanksgiving dinners at army posts, thousands of them wallowed through jungles up to their necks in mire and feasted on "bully beef" as they sought to guard the approaches to Buna in New Guinea. For seven days they battled in constant rain through an enemy infested country where every tree or bush might hide an enemy sharp-shooter. They lived on cold food of which they carried a five day's supply, for no supply line could reach them. The Japanese are in those jungles to stay until they are hunted and shot one at a time. Water is unfit to drink. They carry chlorinating tablets with which to kill the germs in each canteen of water. A 20-pound load becomes a dead weight after two hours travel, but the soldiers carry up to 60 pounds.

70 YEARS AGO December 9, 1932 Omar Thorpe, 13-year-old son of Henry Thorpe, was the youngest hunter in these parts to kill a deer. He was in camp with his father near Park Falls, and it was his first experience in hunting with a rifle.

The board of education presented the school budget for the year July 1, 1932 to July 1, 1933 as $14,800. The Finance Committee recommended the budget be cut to $14,800, which was approved.

100 YEARS AGO December 13, 1902 Farmers will find Separator Oil at the tin shop hereafter instead of at the creamery. Price is 60 cents per gallon.

Fast Freight No. 21 collided with the rear end of the local No. 39 at Eidsvold Monday at 7 p.m. while the latter was doing some switching there. The caboose of the local was badly smashed and the inmates badly shaken up and bruised. The track was blockaded for four hours.
