Meissner Family, Harland

I was born June 9, 1916 in the Town of Rock, Wood Co., Wis. At the age of 1 1/2 years my parents, Edwin and Bertha Meissner moved tot he Town of Fremont, Clark County, Wis., of which we have since been residents. I have three brothers, Chester, Norman, and Douglas, and one sister, Betty. I received my education at the Forestside School, grades one through eight. After finishing school I remained on the farm and helped my parents with the farm work. My dad was also a stone mason and brick layer.

I remained at home until I married Viola Beil, daughter of Paul and Minnie Beil. We were married Oct. 15, 1938, at the Evangelical United Brethren Parsonage of Chili, Wis., by Pastor E. P. Manley. After our marriage we rented my uncle and aunt's (Mr. and Mrs. William Bealer) farm for two years. In the fall of 1940 we moved to my parent's farm for two years and then rented the sixty acres adjoining my parent's farm on the south. In July of 1942 we purchased this sixty acres from the Federal Land Bank and have lived on this farm ever since. In the fall of 1947 I started mason work with my uncle and continued it till 1966. In 1955 my wife and I purchased my mother's personal property and rented her farm as my dad passed away in October 1946. In 1961 we purchased her farm eighty acres adjoining our sixty on the north. In May 1966 my wife and I purchased sixty acres from Henry Stichert which joined ours on the south. Since 1942 this sixty acres has grown to two hundred acres.

In 1967 we remodeled our barn and increased its capacity from 32 to 60 milk cows.

My wife Viola and I are the parents of seven children. They are: Beverly, who married Roland Helm, has four boys and one girl; Larry, who married Judith Ellwein, has one daughter. They both live in Cedarburg, Wis. Lloyd, who married Marilyn Holbrook, has one son. He helps operate this farm and lives on the old Henry Sticker farm. Dale, who married Sandy Peterson, lives in Marshfield, Wis. bonnie and Brenda live at home and attend school.
