Struck on R. R. Crossing Last Sunday evening Mrs. Albert Campbell and baby had a very narrow escape from death. They had been spending the afternoon with the relatives in Houghtonburg and were returning to Merrillan when their buggy was struck by a freight train, east=bound, on what is known as the Robinson crossing, near Frank Leonard’s place. As near as can be ascertained the accident happened in the way. Passenger train No. 1, due here at 5:36 pm, had just passed the crossing and Mrs. Campbell, thinking the track all clear and not hearing the approaching freight, started to drive across. When on the tracks she first saw the fast approaching train. She attempted to back the team out of the way but was too late. The engine struck the team and buggy injuring one of the horses so badly that it had to be killed and laming the other. The buggy was completely wrecked. The occupants were thrown out into the ditch and the demolished rig on top of them, the only injuries they received being a scratch on Mrs. Campbell’s arm and a bruise on the baby’s face. The train was stopped and backed up on the sceen of the accident, the crew giving all assistance possible. A number of nearby neighbors also went to the assistance of Mrs. Campbell and the baby. It was one of those accidents for which no one could be blamed, and that its outcome was not more serious all concerned are very thankful.
