Bio: Horn, Hubert M.'s Sugar Bush
The picture below was taken in April, 1968. The young boy in it, our son Gary Horn, is standing by our complete maple sugar operation in our woods. When we finished boiling down the sap we would bring it home where mom would continue to boil it on her kitchen stove until it reached a certain temperature. Then, she'd can it in tin gallon cans or one gallon glass jars. We made Maple Syrup every second year, as dad had the tools, pans & pails in partnership with his brother, Otto. We consumed about 1 gallon per month, so whatever we made ove 24 gallons, we sold at $5.00 per gal. (at least that was the price as I remember. It could have been cheaper in earlier years).
Ethan Searce noted: There are still several producers in northern Clark Co., Wisconsin. 1. Jacques Sugarbush south of Thorp 2. Lulloffs along Hwy 29 east of Owen (can see the 'sap lines' strung between the trees; have heard that squirrels are a nuisance - puncturing the lines for a drink; also that turkeys are a pain, from trying to roost on the lines - not designed for such use!) 3. Henry Buss (just east, and south on first gravel road; no longer accessible from Hwy 29; our parochial school went there for annual field trip in mid70's and were served fresh pancakes and syrup.. :) 4. Hoovers (south of Curtiss, along CTH E, on corner of jct with CTH N) 5. Glen Herrmann (?) just west of Colby used to have a sugarbush...Just east of Abbotsford (5 miles?) in next county is 6. Dave Loucks, who advertise from their residence along Hwy 29. Actually have liquid-manure spreaders sitting on end, painted to look like syrup jugs!!
