Kuentz, Fred (1847 - NOV 1924)

We received a letter from Mrs. O. Stephens containing the obituary of her father, Fred Kuentz, whom the old settlers here (Dorchester, Clark County, Wis.) will remember as a sawmill man, who owned the mill here twenty-five years or so ago. Mr. and Mrs. Stephens moved west in August for Mrs. Stephen's health, she is still very poorly but is slowly improving.

Following is the obituary from the Vashon, Wash. paper:

Fred Kuentz, an Island resident for more than twenty years, died about midnight last Monday night at the Seattle General Hospital from complications which set in following a major operation performed at that place about three weeks ago. Mr. Kuentz was seventy-seven years old, and while he was of German descent, he was born in the state of Wisconsin, and came to the Island something like twenty-two years ago. He lived a few years near Lisabeula but the remainder of that time was spent in the vicinity of Vashon. He owned a neat, highly developed ranch between the old Vashon school building and the F. A. Weiss home. Funeral arrangements are pending the arrival of a daughter from California and we are informed will be held the last of the week from the Home Undertaking Parlors at 9th and Union.

Mr. Kuentz leaves six children who will all be present at the last sad rites, Eva Kuentz of Long Beach, Calif., Augusta Kuentz of Vashon, Mrs. Oliver Smith of Seattle, Henry, a son who lives in Seattle, a daughter, Mrs. Purschwitz of the Yakima Valley and another daughter whose name we do not know, of the same section. Deceased was an honest, industrious and respected citizen. He minded his own business strictly and his word was as good as his bond. He rests from his labors and Vashon Island is the loser of a good man.
