Bio: Poppe, Elery George
I had a cousin, Elery George Poppe, who was in the Marine Corps during WWII. He was born in Longwood, WI and was stationed on the USS Nevada and transferred from that ship in August, 1941. He told me that transfer probably saved his life, as a few months later it was one of the ships anchored at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Elery saw action on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan and Tinian. He was wounded in one of those battles. Before he retired from the Corps he had reached the rank of Lt. Col. Duane H. |
