--Sechler, Charles (17 Jan. 1846 - 29 July 1932)

Charles Sechler, son of the founder of Sechlerville, and known throughout this part of Wisconsin, died July 29, at Krohn hospital, Black River Falls, at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 12 days. Charles Sechler was born at Williamsport, Pa., Jan. 17, 1846, the second son of Jacob Reese and Susan Harris Sechler. The family came to Wisconsin in the fall of 1855 and spent the winter at Sparta. Mr. Sechler, Sr., had visited the Trempeleau Valley in the summer of 1855 and with faith in its future bought land there. The next spring he moved his family to the Sechler homestead, adjoining the present village of Sechlerville which has ever since been owned in the family.

Mr. Sechler attended the village school and Gale college at Galesville for a few terms. Early he showed a keen business sense and after a partnership with his father finally became manager of their store, the Sechler Mills and their extensive farms.

In 1888 the First National bank was organized at Black River Falls and Mr. Sechler was one of the organizers and was immediately elected to the board of directors, a position he held until his death. About 20 years ago he was elected vice president, an office he has held ever since. He was also interested in other banks in that community and held extensive interests in the Central Wisconsin Telephone Co. In his young manhood he was named postmaster at Sechlerville, a position he held for 30 years. He also served many years on the school board and the Hixton town board. He was exact and painstaking in whatever task he set himself to do.

Mr. Sechler was first married to Miss Josephine Roberts at Black River Falls, Nov. 17, 1871. She died in April, 1882. One daughter, Mrs. Grace Ross, of St. Albans, Vt., survives him. One son, Paul, born to them, died in his boyhood.

On Sept. 18, 1889, he was married to Miss Emma Crane. She survives him with one daughter born to them, Miss Josephine. His brother, Gay R. Sechler, of Black River Falls is the only survivor of his father’s family.

Mr. Sechler enlisted as a private in Co. G., Fifth Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry in 1864 for service in the Civil War, and served until its close.

The funeral was held August 1 from the home with Rev. A. F. Witt officiating.
