Krahn, Walter J. (18 JAN 1907 – 30 JAN 2005)

Walter J. Krahn, 98, Loyal, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, in the Palliative Care Unit at Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Cuddie Funeral Home, Loyal. Following a 10 a.m. visitation, funeral services will be held ay 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 3, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Loyal. The Rev. Daniel Zimmerman will officiate. Burial will be in the Loyal Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of his dart ball team.

Walter John Krahn was born on Jan. 18, 1907, in Milwaukee, to Herman and Sophie (nee Kibbe) Krahn. He was baptized on Feb. 10, 1907, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Milwaukee. He moved to Clark County with his parents, where they lived in the town of Sherman, and he received his education at Veefkind school. He was confirmed on May 20, 1921, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Spencer. He worked on the family farm and also helped neighbors on their farms. He married Linda Schroeder on Oct. 28, 1931, at Salem Lutheran Church, Veefkind. They lived on his father’s farm for two years, and then on Oct. 4, 1933, they moved to Loyal and started Krahn and Schroeder Nursery, which they operated for 40 years. After retiring, he worked for Rinka Funeral Home for 12 years, helping with funerals and driving the hearse. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Oct. 28, 2001. Linda died on April 4, 2002. He continued to live in Loyal until the time of his death. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Loyal, where he and his wife served as the church custodians for many years and was Captain of his dart ball team since 1951, and was a former member of the Loyal Sportsman’s Club.

He will be sadly missed by two sons, Verlyn Krahn, Monroe Center, Ill., and Ronald (Patricia) Krahn, Indianola, Iowa; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Selma Plank, Marshfield.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Linda; Three brothers, Art, Melvin and Bill; and two sisters, Lillian Gessert and Melinda Klug.

Cuddie Funeral Home, Loyal, is assisting the family with arrangements.
