Calway, Albert W. (19 April 1867 – 5 Dec. 1933)

Albert W. Calway, one of the old residents of Neillsville, passed away at the home of his sister, Mrs. A. C. Klopf, Tuesday evening, Dec. 5, aged 66 years, 7 months and 16 days.

He was born April 19, 1867, in St. Josephs, County of Beauce, Province of Quebec, and came to Neillsville with this parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Calway, in 1869.

He attended the city schools and at the age of 16 began to learn the printer’s trade under L. B Ring for whom he worked a number of years.

He graduated from Business College in Winona and secured a position as court reporter, but later came home on account of his father’s sickness. For a time he published a small newspaper here entitled the Neillsville Blade. Later he went to Clinton Junction, and entered into partnership in a printing business. He was married there to Miss Florence Martin in 1894.

Selling out his interest in the business at Clinton Junction, he went to Chicago and worked for a time on the Tribune and later was employed in job offices in Duluth and St. Paul. From there he and his wife and little son Cleon moved to San Francisco, where her parents lived.

In 1906, when he was in poor health, the earthquake and great fire came which resulted in a nervous breakdown. He returned here to the parental home and gradually recovered. From time to time he had been employed in the old Republican and Press Office in Neillsville, and in 1908 worked for a time on the Owen Enterprise. In 1909 he bought the Cabott Blade which he carried on until 1912, when ill health compelled him to sell out. He returned to Owen later and in 1917 came back to work for the Republican and Press, remaining in that office until the consolidation with the Neillsville Times and Granton News in 1921. Since then he has not followed his trade. His health has not been good in recent years and two or three slight strokes this fall hastened his death.

Mr. Calway was of a quiet, peaceable disposition, a reader of good literature and fond of music. He played the flute, guitar and piano and some years ago composed the words and music of a ballad which was published by music house.

He is survived by his wife and son who live in San Francisco; two brothers, Walter of Portland, Oregon, and Forest of Neillsville, and one sister, Inez, Mrs. A. C. Klopf, Neillsville. One sister, Clementine, Mrs. C. Krumrey died some years ago.

Funeral services for Mr. Calway were held Saturday at the Congregational church, Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating.
