Obit: Brott, Nickolas (1801 – 1882)
Surnames: BROTT SIMONS ---------Source: Colby Phonograph (Colby, Clark County, Wis.) 02/22/1882 --------- Brott, Nickolas (1801 – 10 FEB 1882) Died, at his residence in the town of Saukville, Ozaukee Co., on Friday, the 10th inst., Col. Nickolas Brott, in the 82nd years of his age. Mr. Brott was born in the year 1801, in the Mohawk Valley, N.Y. At the age of 9 years he removed with his father to Ohio near the present site of Cleveland, which, at that time was an unbroken wilderness. Here he resided 10 or 12 years, enduring all the hardships of a pioneer life. At the age of 21 he left his father’s home and located for a couple of years in Pennsylvania, from whence he went to Lockport, N.Y., where he spent several years learning the trade of millwright. While at this place he was united in matrimony with Miss Laura Simons, who preceded him to that better land some ten years. He also, at this place, entered the Masonic Lodge, of which order he remained an honored member to the day of his death. Many of the cities of New York and the Canada have today excellent specimens of his handiwork by which to remember him. In 1843 Mr. B. came to Milwaukee and in 1844 built what is known as the “Pioneer Flouring Mills.” In 1847 he settled in the town of Saukville, Ozaukee Co., of which place he was at the time of his death, one of the oldest residents. In 1855-56 he built the Cedarburg Mills. For the past 23 years he has rested quietly on his farm. Mr. B. was the father of seven children, six sons (among whom is Mr. F. Brott of this village – Colby, Clark Co., Wis.) and one daughter, all of whom live to mourn the loss of a loved parent. |
