Salter, Jessie (20 AUG 1883 – 3 MAR 1890)

Died, at the residence of the parents in this village (Colby, Clark Co., Wis.), on Monday, the 3rd inst., of peritonitis, Jessie, second daughter of Richard B. and Sarah Salter, in the 7th year of her age.

Among the hardest duties of the editor is that of chronicling the death of one with whom he is intimately acquainted and one for whom he has an affection. Nearly all know what it is to mourn the loss of a relative or a dear friend. And so it is in this case. Having been an acquaintance and a friend of the father for more than ten years, or before his marriage, acquainted and intimate with the family since their marriage, having dandled Jessie as a babe, caressed her as a child, and loved her as a little maid, her loss strikes us the more severe.

Jessie was born Aug. 20th, 1883, and had she lived until next August would have been seven years of age, a handsome, winsome child. But that inscrutable Providence “that shapes our ends, rough-hew them how we will,” willed it otherwise and took her to join the select on the bright and shining shore, where she will remain one of the brightest diadems in the royal court on high.

In the opening bloom of youthful happiness she went out to play with her young companions, and, in some manner fell, her lower abdomen striking across some hard substance, causing a rupture of the intestines and the peritoneum. Of this the parents knew nothing until the next day, and even then but little importance was attached by either of the parents or attending physician until inflammation had set in; then it was too late, and, notwithstanding, everything possible was done to retain this bright light, it was, on Monday morning last, after a week’s sickness taken to the bosom of him who saith, “Suffer little children to come unto me.”

A short ceremony at the house, consisting of appropriate selections by the choir, short prayer and address by Rev. C. D. Scott, was observed, Tuesday morning, when the remains were escorted to the depot and placed aboard the train to be taken to West Bend for interment, accompanied by the bereaved family and mourning relatives.

Jessie was known to everybody in and about the village, and was a pet among all her acquaintances. Loved by all, all mourn her early demise, and extend their most earnest sympathy to the sorrowing family and relatives.
