Dailey, John M. (29 OCT 1818 – 23 MAR 1891)

Died, at his farm just west of the village (Colby, Clark Co., Wis.), on Monday March 23rd, 1891, John M. Dailey, in the 73rd year of his age.

John Meigs Dailey was born at Trenton Falls, Oneida Co., New York, on the 29th day of Oct. 1818, where he resided until he was 21 years of age; then removed to Chenango Co., in the same state. He was married in 1843 to Miss Maria Palmer, who died in 1866. In the spring of 1853 he moved to this state, settling in Oshkosh, and in the following year he moved to Fond du Lac, where he resided until the spring of 1873, when he came to Colby, taking a homestead claim on the southwest quarter of section fourteen, where he lived until his death. In 1868 he was married to Mrs. Naomi Thresher, who death notice was published last week.

John M. Dailey enlisted on Aug. 13th, 1862, in Co. A 21st Regt. Wis. Vols., and participated in the battles of Perryville, Stone River, Chicamauga, Chattanooga, Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, the march to the sea, and was in the grand review at Washington at the close of the war. During the last year of his service he was on duty at Gen. Hobarts headquarters, and an intimacy and friendship was formed between the General and himself, not often found, considering the difference in stations, that lasted during his life. He was always at the reunions of the old regiment, when his health would permit, and was known as the “father of the regiment.”

He was buried yesterday afternoon by L. N. Earl Post No. 112, of which he was the oldest as well as an honored member and a past Chaplain. Uncle John Dailey is too well known to need any extended eulogy from the Phonograph. His familiar figure and pleasant countenance will be missed from among us.

Two children survive him, Geo. F. Dailey of this place, and Mrs. Mary Lawrence of Lincoln, Neb.
