July 27, 2005 Surnames: Barr, Beohn, Johnson, Herrick, Heck, Marg, Paulson Barr, JACOB ‘JAKE’ Herbert (9 Jan. 1915 – 24 July 2005) Jacob ‘Jake’ H Barr, age 90, of Greenwood, died at the Clark County Health Care Center, in Owen, on Sunday, July 24, 2005. Jacob Herbert Barr was born on Jan. 9, 1915, in Ryegate, MT, the son of Fred and Mary (Beohn) Barr. In 1923, his family moved to Willard, but Jake stayed in Montana to live with his Grandma Barr until he finished the eighth grade. Jake moved to Willard in 1929 and completed his education in Greenwood, graduating from Greenwood High School in 1934. He then moved to Cameron, WI, where he worked with his brother, Tom, with horses and cattle. He entered the U.S. Army on April 11, 1942, and served until his honorable discharge on Dec. 13, 1945. Jake moved back home and bought a tavern in January of 1946. He was united in marriage to Ruth Ann Johnson on July 20, 1946, in Winona, MN. Together they owned and operated Barr’s Bar for 58 years. They also purchased a farm in 1950, just south of the bar, which they farmed until 1988. His wife died on July 24, 2004. Jake had many interests, but especially enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, four-wheeling, snowmobiling, hunting, traveling and camping. Surviving are two sons, Jack (Janet) Barr, of Sun Prairie and Jim (Deb) Barr, of Willard; one daughter Jana (Scott) Herrick, of Willard; five grandchildren, Kim, Chad, Cory, Jackie and Eddie; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Anna Fae Heck of Neillsville and one sister-in-law, Sally Barr of California. Preceding Jake in death were his parents; his wife, Ruth; three brothers, David, Tom and Fred Barr; and two sisters, Frances Marg and Edna Paulson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the family for a fund to be established at a later date. Graveside services will be held at a later date in the Greenwood City Cemetery.
