Snyder, August F. (18 AUG 1856 – 5 FEB 1915)

August F. Snyder, one of our best known citizens, died at his home in this city Friday Feb. 5, 1915. His health began to fail a months or so previous, and a complication of diseases set in. Many of his best friends did not realize the seriousness of his illness, and his death came as a great shock to the community.

He was born on the farm just south of this city (Neillsville, Clark Co.) Aug. 18th, 1856, being one of the first white children in this vicinity. He attended the little country school and later the village school in Neillsville. When he was about 19 years of age he moved with his parents to Iowa, and for a time engaged in the hotel business there. After returning to Wisconsin he clerked for a year at Tomah and a year at Unity; then he went back to Iowa and was in the railroad employ for a year. On returning again to Neillsville he went into the clothing store, remaining in that business either as a clerk or for himself till within the last year. He was married here in 1887 to Stella Selves, who survives him. To them were born six children, all of who are living: Ernest, Elsie (Mrs. Nick Scherer), Vera (Mrs. T.V. Carlton), Edna, Lucille and Charles. He leaves also one sister, Mrs. O. D. West of Webster, Iowa. Mr. Snyder was a man who stood strongly for what he believed to be right. He was honest and square in his dealings, a good citizen and a kind and thoughtful husband and father. He was a member and stood high in the following fraternal orders: Neillsville Lodge, F. and A.M. Neillsville chapter, Neillsville Commandery, Eastern Star, Beavers, E.F. U. and Odd Fellows.

The funeral was held Monday; short services at the home by Rev. L.B. Coleman and church services at the Congregational Church by the free Masons. The Odd Fellow and Masonic Lodges attended in a body, and the large gathering of friends and neighbors attested the esteem to which Mr. Snyder was held.
