Dickinson, Decatur (20 NOV 1836 – 20 FEB 1915)

Decatur Dickinson, one of Neillsville’s oldest citizens, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1915 at the home of Mrs. Maria Dewhurst, aged 78 years and 3 months.

He was born in Tioga Co., Pa., Nov. 20, 1836. In 1855 he came to Madison, Wis., where he remained till 1858. Just before the Civil War broke out he started for the South, but turned back and in 1861 enlisted in the 45th Pennsylvania Vol. And served to the close of the war. He then returned to Wellsboro, Pa., and in 1866 he came to Sparta, Wis. and later to Neillsville, Clark County, where he clerked in the general store of Hewett, Woods and Co. Later, for a year, he was in partnership in the mercantile business with R.J. McBride. Since then he has been in business for himself. In 1876 he moved into the store on Hewett St., where he remained till selling out to Huntley Bros. About three years ago. Mr. Dickinson was married in 1874 to Miss Kate Curtis in Neillsville. To them were born five children, Carrie, Grace, Willis, Richard and Thomas; two survive: Willis and Richard, both living in Utah. Mrs. Dickinson died a few years ago.

D. Dickinson was a man of many noble traits of character. He despised dishonesty, sham and pretense of every kind. He was very kind-hearted, but made no show in what he did for others. He sustained the sorrows of life with quiet dignity. In his unobtrusive way he did much for this community in its earlier days, and his memory should not be forgotten.

The funeral took place at the Dewhurst home Monday, Rev. Fr. Davis, the Episcopal minister from Marshfield officiating.
