Surnames: SILSBEY MASON LUDINGTON Source: CLARK COUNTY REPUBLICAN & PRESS (Neillsville, Wis.) 04/08/1915 Silsbey, Joseph E. (10 JUL 1836 – 5 APR 1915) Joseph E. Silsbey, one of Neillsville’s best old citizens, passed quietly away Monday afternoon, April 5, 1915, aged 78 years, 8 months and 26 days. He was born in Barrington, Yates Co., N.Y., and came with his parents to Clarks Mills, Manitowoc Co., Wis., when about 18 years old. There he was married to Miss Marilla Mason on Feb. 29, 1868. They came to Neillsville, Clark County in 1876 and afterwards moved to Hewettville, where they lived on a farm and later ran the hotel at the old village for some time. Soon after the Hewettville fire they moved to Neillsville. For over thirty years Mr. Silsbey worked for the Hewetts. His faithful service being so well appreciated that one member or another of the family always found employment for him. Before his marriage Mr. Silsbey enlisted in the Civil War and served three years as corporal in Co. D. 27th Wis. Inf. In every place in life Mr. Silsbey did well the work he had to do. His word was as good as gold. He did the things he believed to be just and upright and lived honorably and peacefully with all men. His life is a worthy example to the younger generations of today. He leaves his wife and one daughter, Mrs. A.C. Ludington of Michigan, a grandson and little granddaughter, children of Mr. and Mrs. Ludington. The funeral will be held this afternoon, Thursday, at 2 o’clock at the house. |
