Schofield, Almeria (2 JUN 1846 – 11 DEC 1908)

Another early pioneer of Clark County, Wis. closely identified with its history, and a highly respected citizen, has been removed from our midst by the dark Angel of Death.

Almeria Burt was born June 2, 1846 at Potsdam, N.Y., where her childhood days were spent and where she attended the St. Lawrence Academy. Later she completed her musical education at the Boston Conservatory of music. Because she possessed a voice of unusual sweetness and power she had the honor of being chosen to sing at the Great Peace Jubilee at Boston.

She came to Wisconsin in 1868 and made her home at Weston Rapids, Clark County, where she successfully followed her chosen profession of teaching music.

She was married to Robert Schofield July 23, 1870, and resided at Weston Rapids until 1879, when the family moved to the beautiful Schofield residence in Greenwood, Clark County, Wis., which had just been completed at that time.

About three years ago she went to Arizona to visit friends and fining the climate beneficial to her health, prolonged her stay and about a year ago was joined by her daughter Gratia Morrison and family.

She returned last spring and spent a most enjoyable summer at Ashland, Neillsville and Greenwood, visiting relatives and friends until about Sept. 1st, when she returned to Prescott, Ariz. On Nov. 1st she was stricken with apoplexy, which was soon followed by a second stroke. Her condition became so serious that her daughter, Mrs. Pierrelee and later her son, Dr. H.R. Schofield was summoned to her bedside. They remained with her during her last illness and administered to her wants and tenderly cared for her until she passed away, Dec. 11, 1908.

The remains arrived in Greenwood Wednesday morning, Dec. 16th and the funeral services were held at the residence in the afternoon of that day. The service was conducted by Rev. S.E. Sweet, assisted by Rev. W.T. Hendren, in the presence of many old settlers, friends and relatives. The remains were laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery.

The numerous beautiful floral offerings present on this occasion were a silent tribute to the love and memory of her noble and generous character, and were none too many when compared with her many kind acts and deeds.

She has made a home for and educated several orphans and by inspiration and material assistance has helped many in their struggle for an education, and to better their conditions in general. No service seemed to be too great for her to undertake if she could only help those in trouble.

The deceased is survived by her husband and three children, Mrs. V. T. Pierrelee of Ashland, Wis., Dr. H.R. Schofield who resides at the old home, and Mrs. Gratia Morrison of Prescott, Ariz., one sister, Mrs. F.S. Turney of Mitchell, S.D. and one brother, W.E. Burt of Castle Rock, Wash., who have the deepest sympathy in their irreparable loss.
