Hare, Ernest (13 DEC 1914 – 8 JAN 1934)

The entire community was shocked and grieved Monday evening, Jan. 8, 1934 to learn of the sudden death of Ernest Hare, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hare. Ernest had been working with the CWA at the local Tourist Park and about 4:30 that afternoon complained of a severe headache. Shortly afterward he came home and collapsed as he was about to enter his home. His mother and sister aided him into the house and he was put to bed. Medical aid was at once summoned and although everything possible was done to prolong life, he passed away at 7:20 o’clock. The cause of his sudden death was diabetes.

Ernest William Hare was born in Cooperstown, N.D. Dec. 13, 1914, thus reaching the age of 19 years and 25 days. He resided in Greenwood, Clark County, with his parents during most of his short life. He attended the Greenwood High School and was a graduate with the class of 1933. He was a very industrious student and was on the honor roll many times during his high school career. His interest in school and school activities was shown when he was elected carnival manager for 1932. The year before he was assistant manager. He also earned the distinction of being a leader of athletics and played on the high school basketball team for four years.

When he graduated he was awarded the American Legion medal, an honor he truly deserved. Outside of the school he was never idle, but always kept busy at something and for a time was employed at the New Fair Store. He was a member of the Midget basketball team up to the time of his death. Deceased was a member of the Epworth League and taught the class of Intermediate boys last Sunday for the first time.

He leaves to mourn his loss his father and mother, two brothers, Merrill and George and one sister, Alma. He also leaves other relatives and many friends. Ernest was one of the best liked young men in Greenwood. The community has lost in him a young man who was honest, kindly, honorable and dependable. A young man who was always ready to lend a helping hand and preferred to see the good in people rather than to criticize the evil. He surely was a lad respected by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held from the M.E. Church this Thursday afternoon, Jan. 11th at 2:30 o’clock, Rev. Glenn Shanks officiating. The body will be laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery. The pall bearers will be Albert Neuenfeldt, Donald Syth, Donald Drake, John Stafford, Martin Scherr, Willard Stafford. The bereaved parents, brothers and sister, have the sympathy of the entire community.
