Slocomb, Austin H. (20 APR 1858 - 21 OCT 1920)

Austin Harrison Slocomb was born at Pewaukee, Wis., April 20, 1858, to Charles and Mary Slocomb. In 1868 he came to Clark County, Wis. with his mother and sister, his father being in the army at that time, and they settled in the town of Grant, where he grew to manhood.

On July 26, 1884 he was united in marriage to Frederica Lichte of that place. To this union 14 children were born, two of whom are dead.

He lived on a farm in the town of Grant 4 miles southeast of Neillsville until Oct. 1907, when he sold his farm and moved his family to Loyal, Wis.

His wife died at that place Nov. 5, 1909 and in 1912 he went to Beach, N.D., and took up a homestead and resided there until Oct. 18, when he was taken to the St. Joseph Hospital at Dickinson, N.D., where he underwent an operation for appendicitis. He passed away on the 21st of Oct. at the age of 62 years, 6 months and 4 days.

His body was brought here by his son, Elgie, and funeral services were held at the Pleasant Ridge Church. Burial was at the Grant Cemetery beside his wife.

He leaves to mourn his loss eight sons and four daughters, namely, Asa of Monango, N.D., Charles of Beach, N.D., Ernie of Julesburg, Colo., Elgie of Glen Rock, Wyo., Austin, George and Herian, all of Beach, N.D., Orlin of Neillsville and Lydia, Oettie and Caddie of Beach, N.D., also one brother, Otis.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Scott.

Mr. Slocomb was a man who lived a quiet life. He had met many difficulties and was a hard worker. Those who knew him best, liked him as a man and neighbor.
