Rabenstein, Carl (23 JUL 1887 – 11 OCT 1918)

Last week the mortal remains of Corporal Carl Rabenstein arrived here from overseas, and on Monday funeral services were held at the Reformed Church, Rev. D. Gether officiating. Members of the Otto A. Haugen Post of American Legion attended to do military honors to their comrade.

Carl Rabenstein was born in Neillsville, Clark County, Wis. July 23, 1887, being the older son of Carl and Rachel Rabenstein. He grew to manhood here and graduated from Neillsville High School in the class of 1906. For a time he taught school and later followed the printing trade. He was also foreman in the Neillsville Overall factory for some time, but later took up the printing business again. He was always much interested in military matters, being connected with old Co. A. When the Mexican trouble came he at first was rejected because of having to wear glasses, but he persisted in his application for enlistment and was accepted and went to the Border with Co. A.

When the Great War came on he again entered active service, went to Two Harbors, then to Camp Douglas, thence to Texas. After further drill there he went with a section of old Co. A to France. On Oct. 10 he was severely wounded in battle and died the next day.

Corp. Rabenstein was a young man of fine qualities of mind. He was naturally quiet in manner, studious and thoughtful, but fond of the companionship of his comrades. He was the soul of honor and scorned mean things. He was a model son and brother, thoughtful and helpful in the home. Neillsville laid no more precious sacrifice upon the altar of the nation than Corporal Carl Rabenstein.

There remains to mourn his death his mother, and a sister, Mrs. L.C. Gillard, of Ft. Atkinson, a sister, Mrs. W.E. Woodward of Sentinel Butte, N.D. and one brother, Lieut. Maurel K. Rabenstein, of San Francisco.
