Meacham, 98, Colby, died on Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Colonial Center, Colby. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at United Methodist Church, Colby. The Rev. Lois Takata and the Rev. Virgil Holmes officiated. Burial was in West Spencer Cemetery, town of Sherman. Pallbearers were his four grandsons, Jonathan Gosse, Jeremy Gosse, Jimmy Gosse and Jered Gosse, and Kevin Bargenquast and Dean Habeck. Harvey Meacham was born on July 19, 1904, in the town of Unity, to John and Mary (nee Smith) Meacham. He attended Spencer schools. As a 15-year-old, he began trapping animals as a way to earn extra money. He married Myrtle Holmes on Dec. 25, 1932. He spent four years as an apprentice and then 20 years as a paint decorator. He then changed professions and drove an Allied Van truck for 20 years. After retirement from trucking, he owned and operated his own tree trimming business and was a volunteer driver for both Clark and Marathon counties. He was a member of United Methodist Church, Colby. His interests included bingo, string tricks, quantity guessing games, and making gadgets from things around his home. In the 1940s, he flew a Porterfield single engine plane as a hobby, reaching destinations as far away as Valparaiso, Ind. Survivors include one daughter, Sharwin Gosse, Colby; four grandchildren Jonathan Gosse, Jeremy (Glynda) Gosse, Jimmy Gosse and Jered Gosse; and two great-grandchildren, Cassandra and Damon Gosse. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Myrtle, on Aug. 11, 2000; three brothers and three sisters. Community Funeral Home, Colby, assisted the family with arrangements. |
