Obit: Barker, Rufus (1832 – 1904)
Surnames: BARKER Source: Colby Phonograph (Colby, Clark County, Wis.) 01/21/1904 Barker, Rufus (MAR 1832 – 16 JAN 1904) (Abbotsford Clarion) The friends of Rufus Barker were greatly shocked Sunday morning to learn of his sudden death at his home in the town of Holeton, Marathon Co., Wis., the evening before. Saturday afternoon he was in town with Mrs. Barker and seemed to be about as well as usual. That evening he retired at about 10 o’clock and a short time afterwards he was heard to struggle for breath. Before assistance could be given him he was dead. The cause of his death was heart disease, from which he had been a sufferer for nearly a year past. Mr. Barker was born in Steuben Co., NY., and at the time of his death was 71 years and 10 months of age. He came to Wisconsin 44 years ago, settling in the vicinity of Plover. He came to Marathon Co. 13 years later and settled on a homestead in the town of Holeton, which was his continuous residence until his death. He was married 35 years ago, his wife, and six children, Eva, George, Mabel, Seth, Grace and Elizabeth, surviving him. The funeral services were held at the homestead, Rev. Mr. Wallace officiating, a choir consisting of Miss Baker, Mrs. Everts, Mr. DeLap and Dr. Jackson, with Mrs. Olson as accompanist, assisting. The interment took place in the Dorchester Cemetery. Among those in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. George Sterling, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Moss and Mrs. Norton of Plover, and Mrs. Ghoca of Waupaca.
