Kiehl, Jacob (22 FEB 1839 – 27 MAR 1904)

Jacob Kiehl, aged 65 years, died Saturday of cancer, after a long period of suffering. The funeral will be held from the home tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday) at 2 o’clock, and will be under the auspices of the Dorchester, Clark Co., Wis. Lodge, I.O.O.F., of which he has long been a member.

Jacob Kiehl was born in Germany, Feb. 22nd, 1839. In 1855 he came to the United States, making his home at Syracuse, N.Y. Here he was united in marriage with Miss Maria Schwartz. At the outbreak of the Civil War Mr. Kiehl enlisted with the New York 21st cavalry and served faithfully for three years. At the close of the war he came to Wisconsin and until 1885 lived at Eden in Fond du Lac Co. The family then moved to the town of Holeton, in this county, which has been his home until the time of his death.

Mr. Kiehl is survived by his wife and nine children, Mrs. Emil Kutter of Fresno, Calif., Chas. Kiehl of Athens, George and Jacob S. Kiehl of Everett, Wash., Lawrence Kiehl, who resides at home, Mrs. W. J. Gehrke of this city, Mrs. C.H. Collier of Whatcom, Wash., Mrs. W. H. Morgan of Antigo, and Mrs. W.M. Donohoo of Chicago.

Deceased was well known throughout the country, having served for twelve years as a member of the county board. For the past eight years he has been a member of the county Soldiers’ Relief committee, and almost continually during the time of his residence in the town of Holeton he has served his neighbors and friends in some official capacity. Besides being a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge he was an active member of Dorchester Post, G.A.R.

Mr. Kiehl was a citizen of strict honor and integrity and in every official position gave excellent and careful service. His personal life was above reproach and he died possessed of the full confidence and trust of all who knew him.
