Kraus, Hubert (21 MAY 1829 - 2 APR 1908)

At an early hour Thursday morning, April 2, 1908, Hubert Kraus passed to his reward at his home in this city, at the advanced age of 78 years, 10 months and 12 days.

The deceased was born in Bezerk Koblenz, Germany, May 21, 1829. At the age of thirteen years he accompanied his father and three brothers to America and shortly afterwards they located in Marytown, Fond du Lac County, where he aided his father clearing the land and making a home. In 1859 he was married to Katherine Herzog and they continued to reside in the neighborhood of Marytown until May 1875, when they came to this city and Mr. Kraus purchased a half interest in the Western House, which was located on West Main St., conducted the same in partnership with Chas. Menig for about five months. In October of the same year he purchased from W.D. Kollock the Washington House on State St. and conducted that hotel and boarding house until death’s summons came. He was an ideal landlord, pleasant and accommodating and his place was known far and wide by the transients who always had a good word to say for him and his hotel. Some five years ago his health began to fail and he was unable to take as active a part in his business as he wanted to, but he was nevertheless always around seeing that his guests were receiving every courtesy. For the past eight weeks his family and intimate friends, noticed that he was failing rapidly and his death, although sudden, was not wholly unexpected.

He was a true and loyal citizen, a good husband and father, a devout and charitable Christian and a firm believer in the Catholic Church. No one was ever turned away from his place of business because he was unable to pay for a meal. He fed the hungry and poor and was never known to speak of his kindly deeds. The writer of this short sketch knew Hubert Kraus intimately for thirty years and can say truthfully that no man ever had a better or kinder neighbor or friend. He is survived by his aged wife, three sons, Peter M. of this city, Math. J. of Oshkosh, and C. Jos. Of Colby, Clark Co., five daughters, Mmes. P.M. Petersen of this city, A.F. Steffen of Sheboygan, Chas. X Arps, and Jos. Sturm of this city, and Gerhard C. Kersten of Colby, also by fifteen grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 10:00 o’clock this Saturday morning, from St. Mary’s Church with interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery. St. Joseph’s Society, of which he was a member in good standing, will be in charge.
