Philippi, Anton (14 APR 1880 – 2 MAY 1911)

Anton Philippi died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, Tuesday night, May 2nd, 1911, following an operation for appendicitis which was performed at two o’clock Sunday morning by Drs. Doege of Marshfield, and A.M. Christofferson of this city (Colby, Clark Co., Wis.).

Tony was a member of one of the Soo Line bridge crews and a steady hardworking young man. His brother-in-law, Will Burmeister, member of the same crew, says that Tony had complained of a pain in his right side three weeks ago, but would not take a layoff or consult a doctor, thinking very little of his ailment. Last Thursday however, he was prevailed upon to consult a Ladysmith physician, which he did, and was ordered by that gentleman to “get home quick and call in the home doctor.” Tony arrived here Friday and on Saturday called Dr. Christofferson, who found him suffering from an unmistakable attack of appendicitis. Dr. A.M. Christofferson and Mike Philippi took him to the hospital on the 11:50 limited and he was operated immediately upon their arrival. They found a badly ruptured appendix and the patient in a most critical condition, and did their utmost to save his life, but to no avail.

Anton Philippi was born in the town of Colby, Clark Co., April 14th, 1880, and made Colby his home up to the time of his death. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Woodmen and the Beavers. He leaves to mourn his early death, his parents, four sisters and four brothers, Peter of Dale; Mrs. Frank Chase, Colby; Nick of Neillsville; Mrs. Will Burmeister and Katie, Colby; Mike M. of Marshfield; Laura, Colby, and John M. of Lake Villa, Ill.

The funeral will be held from St. Mary’s Church, Saturday morning, at ten o’clock.
