The John Delack Family

John Delac/Delack was born about 17 Feb 1838 in Germany. He came to America with his parents John & Catherine Delack when he was only two years old.

He served in the Civil War serving in Co K of the 3rd Minnesota Inf. from 19 Mar 1864 to 2 Sept 1865. 3rd Regiment, Minnesota Infantry Organized at Fort Snelling, Minn., October 2 to November 14, 1861. Left State for Louisville, Kentucky, November 17-20, 1861. Attached to 16th Brigade, Army Ohio, to March, 1862. 23rd Independent Brigade, Army Ohio, to August, 1862, Dept. of the Northwest to February, 1863. District of Columbus, Kentucky, 6th Division, 16th Army Corps, Dept. of the Tennessee, to May, 1863. 3rd Brigade, Kimball's Provisional Division, 16th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee, to July, 1863. 3rd Brigade, Kimball's Division, District of Eastern Arkansas, to August, 1863. 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, Arkansas Expedition, to November, 1863. 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, Army of Arkansas, to January, 1864. 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 7th Army Corps, Dept. of Arkansas, to May, 1864. 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 7th Army Corps, to September, 1865.

SERVICE.-Moved to Louisville, Kentucky, November 17-20, 1861. At Camp Jenkins till December 6, and at Shepherdsville, Lebanon Junction and Belmont, Ky., guarding Louisville & Nashville Railroad till March, 1862. Moved to Nashville, Tennessee, March 11-24, and duty there till April 27. Moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, April 27, and garrison duty there till July. Dumont's Expedition to Pikesville June 11-18. Forest's attack on Murfreesboro July 13. Regiment surrendered, paroled and sent to Benton Barracks, Mo., Company "C" being on detached duty was not captured. Joined 2nd Minnesota at Nashville, Tennessee, and with it till September 30, when left for Minnesota. March to Wartrace July 13, thence to Tullahoma July 15, and to Murfreesboro July 22. To Nashville, Tennessee, with prisoners August. Regiment declared exchanged August 27. Moved to Minnesota August 28-September 4. March to Fort Ridgly to join Sibley September 5-13. Sibley's Campaign against hostile Sioux Indians September 13-November 14. Battle of Wood Lake , Yellow Medicina, September 23. A detachment of Regiment march from Fort Snelling to relief of Fort Abercrombie on Red River September 11-October 5, then joined Regiment at Camp Release. Duty at Fort Snelling reorganizing till January 16, 1863. Moved to Cairo, Illinois, January 16-26, 1863, thence to Columbus, Kentucky, February 3, and duty there till March 12. Expedition to Fort Heiman March 12-14. Duty at Fort Heiman and operations against guerrillas till June 2. Expedition into Tennessee May 26-June 2 (Cos. "B," "D," "G" and "H"). Moved to Columbus, Ky., thence to Vicksburg, Miss., June 2-9. Siege of Vicksburg , Miss., June 9-July 4. Moved to Oak Ridge July 5, and duty there till July 21. Moved to Helena, Ark., July 24-26. Steele's Expedition to Little Rock August 13-September 10. Bayou Fourche and capture of Little Rock September 10. Garrison duty at Little Rock till April 28, 1864. Regiment veteranize January, 1864. Expedition up White River to Augusta March 30-April 3. Battle of Fitzhugh's Woods April 1 (Cos. "B," "C," "E," "G," "H" and "I"). Moved to Pine Bluff April 28, and duty there till October 10. Veterans of Companies "B," "C," "E," "G," "H" and "I" on furlough August 14-October 17. Rejoined at Duvall's Bluff. Non-Veterans moved to Duvall's Bluff October 10, and duty there till May 18, 1865. Moved to Batesville May 13-20. Companies assigned to duty as follows: "D" and "G" at Batesville, "A" and "F" at Searcy, "E" and "H" at Augusta, "B," "C," "I" and "K" at Jacksonport, Companies "C" and "I" moved to Powhatan July 19. Regiment concentrated at Jacksonport and moved to Duvall's Bluff August 29. Mustered out September 2 and discharged at Fort Snelling, Minn., September 16, 1865.

Regiment lost during service 17 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 4 Officers and 275 Enlisted men by disease. Total 296.

John’s occupation was listed as a farmer so he must have lived in Minnesota before the War and returned there after the War

He married Lydia Babcock in 1873 in Olm Lydia was born in PA about 1849. Where she lived until her parents Enos & Abrigail (Huyler) Babcock moved to Olmstead, Minnesota.

Soon after they married they moved to Clark County, Wisconsin and settled on a farm about a mile from Thorp, Wisconsin and she lived out her life there except for a few months spent visiting relatives in Dakota the year before she died. (Her parents, one brother and five sisters resided in Dakota)

She died on 21 Aug. 1886 of a complication of diseases; at the age of only 37 years 1 month and 23 days.

John & Lydia had five children; three boys and two girls.

An 1880 Census record show a John Delack b 1838 in Germany with residence Hixon, Clark County, Wisconsin and a Lydia Delack b 1849 Pennsylvania residence Hixon, Clark County, Wisconsin. Other Delacks’ shown are E.B. Delack b 1877 Wisconsin residence Hixon, Clark County, Wisconsin CG Delack b 1875 Minnesota residence Hixon, Clark County, Wisconsin and LD Delack B 1870 Wisconsin residence Hixon, Clark County, Wisconsin.

I believe these others may be their children.

John Delack is also shown on the 1890 Veterans Special Schedule Census as John Delack, other listed Frances Delack, Clark County, Wisconsin. (This would be his widow, Frances applying for his pension.)

John Delac/Delack married a second time to a Mrs. Francis Nettleton 13 Dec 1887. It is said in his obituary he had three boys and two girls, the oldest being fourteen years of age from his first marriage at the time of his death. The obituary goes on to say he had another three boys and two girls by his second wife. Lani note/Feb 2006 the obituary implies that John and Francis had married in March of 1888 eight months before his death but his grave information lists their marriage date as 13 Dec 1887.

John Delac/Delack died at his home in the town of Withee, Clark Co WI on Friday 2 Nov. 1888 of typhoid pneumonia. He was about fifty years old. Lani note/Feb 2006

Francis Delack, John’s second wife was married five times. Her maiden name was Waite. She was b 21 July 1849. Her first husband was a man whose last name is all we know about him – McCarty/McCarthy. From this marriage she had two sons Benjamin and Edward. I know this because Francis and this McCarthy man are my great great grandparents. Her next marriage was to a man named Nettleton. Her third marriage was to John G Solomon. Her fourth marriage was to John Delack. Her fifth and final marriage was to James Smith.

She died 4 Nov 1916 at her home in Thorp, Clark County, Wisconsin after suffering a stroke at the age of sixty- six. She had been a resident of Thorp, Clark County, Wisconsin for thirty-five years. Her obituary says, “ She was a good woman always willing to assist in cases of sorrow, of which she herself carried a burdensome share at times during her life” I would guess so burying five husbands in her lifetime! She left to mourn a son Ben McCarthy of Thorp, Clark County, Wisconsin (my great Grandfather); and three daughters Mrs. Rudolph (Elizabeth) Plecity of Thorp, Clark County, Wisconsin and Mrs. Louis Goss of Gibson, Illinois. She also left a sister who resided in North Dakota. Her funeral took place from St Bernard’s Catholic Church and she was buried at East Thorp Cemetery, Withee, Clark County, Wisconsin.
