Mahar, Merton E. (1881? – 12 Jan. 1937)

Merton E. Mahar was born in Neillsville, the parents living at that time in a house which stood on a lot later replaced by the Mrs. W. L. Hemphill residence. He grew to young boyhood here and when he was six years of age the family moved to Milwaukee where he has since resided. He was a man of highest type of character and possessed a most pleasing personality. He was ambitious and keen of mind, and this combination brought him success in all his undertakings.

Mr. Mahar was a kind and loving son, husband and father. Since his mother left Milwaukee in 1923 to return to the old home city she loved, he failed not once in the weekly letter to her and was ever concerned to her behalf.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Salow, a few days before Mr. Mahar’s passing and he made a trip to the hospital to see his daughter and to smile upon his little grandson only two days before the end came.

A Milwaukee paper has the following to say of Mr. Mahar:

“Merton E. Mahar, a retired sales engineer, died Tuesday at his home, 3112 W. Glendale Ave., after an illness of a year. He was 56.

Born at Neillsville, Wis., he had been a resident of Milwaukee since he was 6 years of age. At one time he was treasurer of the Schiffler Brothers Co., a biscuit firm, now the Quality Biscuit Co., and later he was president of the Mahar-Zentner Co., wholesale confectioners. For 12 years he was associated with the Northwestern Malleable Iron Co., and for 7 years he was sales manager of the Milwaukee Stamping Co. Prior to his retirement two years ago, Mr. Mahar served several firms as a sales engineer.

Surviving are his wife, Sophia Haubert Mahar; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Van Es and Mrs. Theodore Salow; a son, Ralph H., all of Milwaukee; and his mother, Mrs. Josephine Mahar of Neillsville.

Funeral services were held at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at the Ritter chapel 5304 W. North Ave., and at 10 a.m. at All Saints Cathedral. Burial took place at Wisconsin Memorial Park.
