(November 8, 1922 - January 1, 2006) Walter Hillert, age 83, of Sheldon, died Sunday, January 1, 2006 at Our Lady of Victory Hospital in Stanley. Walter was born at home in Chili, on November 8, 1922 the son of Frederick and Barbara (Frei) Hillert. He attended the Cozy Corner and Franklin Schools. On August 12, 1961 he married Margaret Elizabeth Lichte in Chili. They later divorced. During the 70’s he worked at a Cranberry Marsh and The Midwest Livestock Producers Auction Barn. He also hauled milk for the Geldernick Cheese Factory in Chili. He then farmed and helped out other farmers. He ran the grader for the Chili and Fremont Townships and also sharpened saws. Walter loved fishing and hunting but mostly playing Cribbage at the Granton Sportsman’s Club. He is survived by seven children, Rose (Bill) Brunsell of Plainfield; Barbara (Andrew) Nichols of Greenwood; Jeannette Hillert (Ernie Vetterkind) of Thorp; Patricia Hillert (Larry Schultz) of Willard; Peggy Hillert (Mike) of Neillsville; Dennis (Jill) Hilleert of Spencer; and Charles Hillert of Loyal; one brother, Harold (Lillian Long) of Granton; nine grandchildren; and one step grandchild. His parents and two sisters, Velda and Frieda, preceded him in death. Funeral services for Walter will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 5, 2006 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Granton. Pastor John Trewyn will officiate. Visitation time will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, January 4, at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville and again Thursday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. Serving as casket bearers will be Charles and Dennis Hillert, Dustin and Zach Nichols, Dillon and Jesse Schultz. The Gesche Funeral Home of Neillsville is assisting Walter’s family with arrangements.
