Silbernagel, Peter J. (29 Dec. 1920 – 8 April 2006)

LINTON - Peter J. Silbernagel, 85, Linton, died April 8, 2006, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton, with the Rev. Kenneth Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, at Myers Funeral Home, Linton. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton.

Peter J. Silbernagel was born Dec. 29, 1920, on a farm near Strasburg, the son of John and Angela (Miller) Silbernagel. He attended country school in Krassna and served in the Conservation Corp Camp. Pete served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Rose Ternes at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Krassna, May 10, 1943. In 1946, they bought a farm northwest of Linton. In 1951, they moved into Linton and owned and operated Hillside Grocery until 1954, and continued farming until very recently. A retirement farm auction was planned for April 8. In the early morning of the day of that event, Pete died suddenly at his home.

He believed in giving back to the community and was active in many organizations during the years they lived in Linton. Pete served on the Linton City Council and had served as mayor. Peter also served on Emmons County Social Service Board and was a charter member of the Emmons County Farm Bureau and Emmons County Historical Society.

Pete was a member of the Linton American Legion, serving as commander, a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, Linton Fire Department, Emmons County Wildlife Club, Boy Scout Leader, Knights of Columbus including the 40 & 8 Chapter. Pete was active in Alcoholics Anonymous and the Republican Party.

He enjoyed farming, loved the land and spending time with family and friends. Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Rose, Linton; nine sons and four daughters-in-law, Peter and Cathy, Casselton, Paul and Barb, Bismarck, Urban, Mandan, Dennis, Billings, Mont., Gilbert, Las Vegas, Dave and Janette, Boise, Idaho, Lyle, Austin, Texas, Martin and Carol, Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Tom, Neillsville, Wis.; six daughters and five sons-in-law, Angeline and Jack Bushy, Daytona, Fla., Donna and Frank Bosch, Kalispell, Mont., Alice and Vic Carufel, Bismarck, Carol and Robert Fink, Roseville, Calif., Adella and Bruce Poppke, Evanston, Wyo., and Mary Banek, El Paso, Texas; 28 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Adam and Angeline Silbernagel, Strasburg; and four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Cecelia and John Fischer, Anaconda, Minn., Rosemary Schwahn, Strasburg, Alice and Aloyse Burgad, Bismarck, and Phyllis Malsom, Billings, Mont.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Tillie Mack; six brothers, Joseph, John, Max, Felix, Albert and Leopoldina; and one daughter-in-law, Laura Silbernagel.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Heartview Foundation, 101 E. Broadway Ave., Bismarck, N.D., and Sacred Heart Monastery, Box 364, Richardton, N.D. 58652.
