A Marshfield man, formerly a Unity village official, was instantly killed last night when his car rammed the rear of a stalled truck loaded with 7 tons of limestone on Highway 97, a half mile south of the intersection with Highway 29 in Marathon County.

He was Theodore R. Salter, 52, 511 W. Sixth St., who died in his demolished car in a collision with a truck driven by Albert Storm, Park Falls. The truck driver sustained only minor damage.

According to Marathon County traffic police, the accident occurred at 6:10 p.m.

Storm had entered the highway from a private drive on the west side of the road and turned south when motor trouble caused his truck to stall. The truck was halted in the west lane and partly on the shoulder, police said. Salter, southbound from Wausau to Marshfield, crashed into the rear of the stalled vehicle.

Salter, who was alone in his car, was extricated from the wreckage and rushed by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital at Wausau, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Coroner John Hildensperger, Wausau, said that death was due to multiple crushing injuries of the chest. He said the fatality has been ruled accidental and no inquest will be held.

The fatality was Marathon county’s 29th traffic death this year.

Funeral services for the victim will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hansen Funeral Home, and burial will take place in Hillside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning this evening.

Theodore R. Salter was born in Unity, Wis. Jan. 1, 1902, and received his education there and at the University of Wisconsin. He married the former Lucille Lueloff at Colby Oct. 12, 1929, and lived in Unity until 1950, when the family moved to Marshfield. While at Unity, he served as president of the Village Board and treasurer of the School Board.

For the past three years Mr. Salter was employed as a salesman for the Clay Equipment Corp., Cedar Falls, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, three children, Mrs. Don (Maxine) Olson, Loyal and Betty Jane and Sally Ann Salter, students at the University of Wisconsin; a brother, Arthur, Marshfield; four sisters, Mrs. Marian Tschudy, principal of Lincoln School here, Mrs. E.C. Vogt, St. Paul, Mrs. James L. Stump, Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. Harvey L. Eby, Los Angeles; and a grandson.
