--------- Salter, John F. (23 FEB 1893 – 16 JAN 1937)

Pittsville – John F. Salter, 43, prominent for many years in central Wisconsin Athletic circles, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, of pneumonia. He had been ill for a week and was taken to the hospital in a serious condition on Thursday.

A native of Colby (Clark Co., Wis.), where he was born on Feb. 23, 1893, Mr. Salter was graduated from the Colby High School in 1911 and from Carroll College, Waukesha, in 1914. He enlisted in the United States Army on Dec. 6, 1917, and sailed for France in 1918, returning in July 1919.

He was married to Miss Stella Meyers at Colby on Sept. 22, 1919, and was engaged in the general retail trade here from that time until his death.

Active in civic affairs, he was best known in the area outside his own community as a sponsor and devotee of athletics. He coached Pittsville basketball team in 1925 and was assistant coach for several years thereafter, and was coach of the city team at the time of his death. He also managed the Pittsville baseball team for many years.

Always a community booster, he was one of the leaders in the attempt to secure a new high school for Pittsville. He was a past commander of the Pittsville American Legion post and past worshipful master of the Masonic organization of the city.

He is survived by his wife and one son, Victor; by a sister, Mrs. C.R. Freeman, Menomonie; and two brothers, G.H. Salter of New London, formerly his business partner, and R.O. Salter, Colby.

A military funeral will be conducted on Tuesday, with rites at the home at 1:30 p.m., and at the community hall at 2 p.m. The Rev. A.F. Spangenberg will officiate and burial will take place in Mound Cemetery.
