Obit: Kaloczkowski, Anna (1888 – 1931)
Surnames: KALOCZKOWSKI KALACZKOWSKI KALACZYKOWSKI Source: OWEN ENTERPRISE (Owen, Clark County, Wis.) 01/15/1931 --------- Kaloczkowski, Anna (1888 – 11 JAN 1931) Mrs. Anna Kaloczkowski, 42 and her 4-year-old daughter, Eleanor, were killed Sunday as the result of a grade crossing crash two miles east of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), while they were returning home from church services. Their automobile was struck by the Soo line passenger train No. 1 about noon Sunday. The mother was killed instantly and the daughter died en route to a Thorp physician’s office. Mrs. Kalaczkowski’s older daughter, Emily, who was driving the automobile, a touring car, and her cousin, also named Emily Kalaczkowski, who was in the front seat with her, escaped by jumping. According to the best available information, the mother called to her daughter to stop the car and not to try to cross the tracks in front of the train, which was yet some distance away. The girl applied the brakes, it is said, and tried to stop the car, but the roadway was slippery and the car skidded onto the tracks and stalled. The two in the front seat managed to get out of the stalled car before the train struck. The mother and the younger daughter, who were in the back seat, were unable to get out. Side curtains fastened on the outside of the car hampered Mrs. Kalaczykowski’s efforts to get out. It is reported that the driver stated that if no attempt had been made to stop the car she would have made the crossing ahead of the train. The train dragged the car 50 feet and tossed the body of the mother an additional 50 feet. |
