A host of friends crowded the First Congregational Church Sunday afternoon to pay last respects to Leslie S. Marden, 61, highly esteemed and kindly supervisor of Neillsville’s first ward.

Mr. Marden’s death last Thursday came suddenly in Marshfield hospital, where he had been confined with a leg fracture since February 23. It was believed that the fracture was knitting and that he was on the road to recovery, but embolism, the obstruction of blood passage in the veins by clots developed, and death followed swiftly.

The services Sunday were impressive. Yet, they were as simple and sincere as the man for whom they were conducted. The Rev. George W. Longenecker conducted the rites, and the choir of the church sang. Many of Clark County’s board of supervisors were present. Six of their number acted as pallbearers. They were Chairman Elmer Anderson of York, Elmer Buddenhagen of Levis, Forrest D. Calway and V. C. Woelffer of Neillsville, William Zank of Pine Valley and W. L. Murphy of Dewhurst.

Burial was made in the Neillsville Cemetery.

With the death of Mr. Marden, Neillsville has suffered the loss of her best “fixer.” For it was Mr. Marden’s mechanical bent which made his name blessed throughout the city. For years, since coming here from a farm near Tioga, he had plied his trade. And during those years housewives and businessmen, alike, had learned to rely on him when something mechanical went wrong.

Nor was their trust misplaced; for, in spite of a crippled arm and leg, Mr. Marden had that strange genius which made it possible for him to fix almost anything which might be directed his way.

Mr. Marden was born in Lloyd, Richland County, on August 15, 1877, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Marden. Some time later he moved to a farm near Tioga with his parents and brothers and sister, and came to Neillsville in about 1904.

He was married December 22, 1913, to Eva Newell, who survives. Other survives include a daughter, Mrs. Lynn (Irene) Wall of Evansville; two sons, Erwin of Neillsville, and Glen, at home; five brothers, George and William Marden of Greenwood, Ira Marden of Bainesville, Mont., J. E. Marden of Woodland, Wash., and Steven Marden of Bellevue, Wash.; a sister, Mrs. Cora Andrews of Clay Center, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews.
