Josephine V. Mendalski, age 71, of Town of Taft, died Sunday, August 11, 2002 at Victory Medical Center, Stanley.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 14, 2002, 10:30 a.m. at St. Hedwig’s Chapel, Thorp. Father John Puerner officiated and burial was in New St.Hedwig’s Cemetery, Thorp. Pallbearers were Michael Auman, Michael Burzynski, Joseph Pletka, John and Larry Auman and Bill Tonn.

Josephine Viola Horounziak was born on March 3, 1931 in the Town of Thorp the daughter of Walter and Mary (Pletka) Horounziak. She attended the Thorp area schools. On June 10, 1950, Josephine and Thomas Mendalski were united in marriage at St. Mary’s Junction. The couple lived in Hammond, IN, where Josephine was a home nurse and raised their six children. The couple retired and moved back to Thorp in 1981. Josephine loved gardening, canning, and was a dedicated New York Mets fan and especially supported their player: Mike Piazza. Josephine was a wonderful mother and Grandmother. She was a member of St. Bernard’s-St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Thorp.

She will be sadly missed by her children: Roy of Thorp, Jimmy of Thorp, Kathleen Dunigan of Hobart, IN, Kristine (Randy) Manns of Tullahoma, TN, Darlene (Terry) Mitchell of Hammond, IN and Carol (Steve)Tullier of Tukwila, WA; 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; her brothers: Walter (Diane) Horounziak, and David Horounziak both of Milwaukee; her sisters: Mary Auman of Stanley, Sara (Irvin) Bordman of North Carolina and Irene Huhni of Idaho. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Thomas Mendalski.
