(Thursday, October 4, 1888) Over in the beautiful fountain that adorns our court house square, there is a young loon, a species of bird that is about a much fish as it is fowl. How it got there is a mystery. Sheriff Healey says that Hod Blanchard brought it over when he came to the Republican convention.

Others say that the bird was fling over the city and attracted by gas lights and the sparkle of that fountain, he just dropped in.

Admiring crowds surround the fountain and watch his antics as he dives and brings up the little fish that have been the sole living occupants of the fountain during the past summer.

A look need quite a space in which to rise from the water, and as the rim of the fountain is high enough to prevent his taking wing, he will remain a prisoner. His glossy coat and sparkling little red eyes will attract crowds of children of all ages to see him, and all will ask how in thunder did he get there?

(Thursday, October 4, 1888) Henry Schraufnagel had the misfortune to get a leg broken, one day last week, while working on a bridge in the North part of the town of Hull.

Both bones were broken square off about midway between the knee and ankle joints. This is a sad misfortune for Henry, as it will lay him up the whole fall. Dr. Von Neupert reduced the fracture.

(Thursday, October 4, 1888) Arthur Collins was the first to bring in a deer. He succeeded in killing a fine buck, with the handsomest pair of antlers we have ever seen. Arthur shared with the printers but will have the antlers mounted and keep them in commemorative of his first deer.
