Garber,John (August 8, 1846 – Sept 11,1930)

John Garber, who has been confined to his bed for several weeks passed away at his home in the town of Cleveland early Thursday morning. Old age and heart trouble was the cause of his death.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:00 o’clock at the house and 2:00 at St. John's church.

John Garber was born in Wurtenburg, Germany on August 8,1846 and came to this country with his parents at the age of two years. They settled in Sauk county, Wisconsin, where he grew to manhood and was united in marriage to Miss Emma Burkhart, also of Sauk county on Decemeber 7, 1873. They moved to the farm in the town of Cleveland, Jackson county in 1889, which has since been the family’s home.

Surrounded by their children, grandchildren, and friends Mr. and Mrs. Garber celebrated their golden anniversary and a year and five months later, April 15, 1925, his helpmate of half a century was taken. Mr. Garber passed away September 11,1930 at the age of 81 years, 1 month and 3 days.

Ten children were born to this union three of whom have preceded him in death, namely, Pauline (Mrs. Frank Zimmerman), Matilda, (Mrs. Harry Waters), and Walna.

Surviving are four sons, Emil, of Altoona; Alvin and Will, residing here; and three daughter, Mrs. Hulda Winscher, Mrs. Louise Bryner, residing here and Mrs. Agnes Lubinski of La Crosse.

All were present at the funeral excepting Mrs. Lubinski, who was unable to come.

Four sisters also survive. Twelve grandchildren and four great-greatchildren also mourn his death.

The burial service was held at St. John’s Reformed church last Saturday afternoon, Rev. V. D. Weidler preaching the funeral sermon. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery at Alma Center. His four sons and two grandsons, Earl Zimmerman and Elma Garber were the pallbearers.

Relatives from away attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Waters, of La Crosse; Herman Burkhart, Ed Burkhart and Mrs. Louise Schlag, of Sauk City; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Burkhart of Baraboo and Fred Schumann, of Eau Claire.
