Joseph C. Benjamin, 86, of 34 years a resident of Neillsville, passed away at his home at 235 East Sixth and Willow Streets at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, after an illness of about three years. He was the last member of a family of six children.

Mr. Benjamin was born at Bainbridge, New York, January 25, 1854, to Clark and Jane Benjamin, who came to Wisconsin to make their home when he was five years of age. He lived for many years at Burns Valley, La Crosse County, and then came to Neillsville to assist his wife in caring for her aged father. They decided to make their permanent home here. Mr. Benjamin conducting a business as long as he was able. He was highly respected as a citizen, friendly and charitable of nature, a man who saw only the best in his neighbors and friends and therefore lived a peace with them always. During the years when he came less active and even long after his health failed. Mr. Benjamin remained cheerful and enjoyed the quiet life. He was deeply appreciative of the tender care given him by his wife, the frequent visits of his lovely daughters and their families, and the attentions bestowed by the neighbors and friends.

Mr. Benjamin is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Ella Bowler, Bangor, Wisconsin, and Mrs. J. G. Donovan, Milwaukee, and a granddaughter, Mrs. E. E. DcGaynor, Bangor. Mrs. Bowler and Mr. and Mrs. Donovan were here for the rites.

Funeral services were held at the Jaster Funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 29, services being conducted by the Rev. G. W. Longenecker of the Congregational Church in which faith the departed was christened. Mrs. Jaster sang “Asleep in Jesus,” and “The Lord is My Shepherd,” accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Jess Scott. Interment was made in the Neillsville Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Arnold Dudei, Harry St. Clair, William Bradford, Martin Hauge, Glenn Haven and Frank Lipkie.
