Obit: Bornhofen, Susie (1867 – 1940)
Surnames: Bornhofen, Marx, Biegler Source: Clark County Press (Neillsville, Clark County, Wis.) Thurs., 12 Sept. 1940 ----Bornhofen, Susie (15 Jan. 1867 – 8 Sept. 1940) Mrs. Susie Bornhofen, who suffered a stroke of paralysis in Neillsville about three months ago, passed away at the home of her son, John Bornhofen, Owen, Wis., at 11:00 a.m. September 8, 1940. Mrs. Bornhofen was born at Keil, Germany, January 15, 1867, to John and Katherine Marx, the mother passing away when she was but seven days old. In 1871, Mr. Marx and his children, four sons and three daughters, came to America, settling at Newburg, Wis. Mrs. Bornhofen came to Neillsville when she was 18 years of age. On the second day of February, 1890, she was united in marriage to Anton Bornhofen, who preceded her in death July 18, 1901. The year 1940 marked the fiftieth year of her marriage, and also the fiftieth yea since she became a member of the Altar Society of St. Mary’s Church, having been a life-long member of the Catholic Church. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Bornhofen assumed the task of supplying a livelihood for herself and her son, then a lad of nine. The rare courage of Susie Bornhofen often brought forth expressions of admiration. She worked exceptionally hard and managed exceedingly well. She was thorough and reliable. Throughout life she continued to do her best. Seventeen years ago she began work at the Merchants hotel, where she had complete charge of the sleeping rooms. It was here, at the age of 73 that Mrs. Bornhofen still tripped quietly from room to room, leaving order and cleanliness behind her. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, a granddaughter, Mary Kay Bornhofen, of Owen, and a brother, Matthew Marx, Neillsville, who is that last of John Marx, Sr., Family. Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m., Father J. A. Biegler officiating. Interment was made in the Neillsville Cemetery.
