Alton, Michael C. (7 APR 1845 - 24 FEB 1918)

Michael C. Alton died at his home in the town of York, Clark County, Wis., Sunday morning, Feb. 24, 1918, after an illness of many years. In Feb. 1915 he suffered a stroke of paralysis, since which time he has been an invalid.

Michael Alton was born in Jefferson Co., N.Y., April 7, 1845. He came to Hartford, Wis. with his parents when one year old. In 1856 they moved from there to New Lisbon, Wis. In the fall of the same year they located in Monroe Co. near Oakdale. He enlisted at Tomah in the Fourth Regiment of Wis. Cavalry in Jan. 1864, in which he served until discharged at Madison in July 1865.

Since 1889 he has been a member of the G.A.R. post at Tomah, Wis. For the past 25 years he has been a member of the Knights of Phytheans, having served in numerous chairs of the subordinate lodge. Also as representative to the Grand Lodge of Wisconsin.

At Tomah, Wis. on Dec. 25, 1871 he was married to Miss Viola Cordelia Parker. Except for one year in Minnesota they made their home near Tomah until July 1902, when they moved to Clark County, where they have lived ever since.

To them were born ten children, two of whom died in infancy, and a third, Mrs. Edith Gault "passed on" in June 1904. He is survived by his wife and seven children: Ethel M. at home; Alvin L. Alton of Tomah, Wis.; Mrs. Annie Timerson, Mrs. Ida root and Mrs. Fern VandeBerg, of the town of York; Mrs. Matilda Calkins of Exland, Wis. and Mrs. Viola Lawrence of Missoula, Mont., also by eleven grandchildren.

Mr. Alton was a man of upright character. His earnestness and faithfulness in whatever he believed to be right, together with his jovial manner, made his life one to be emulated.

The funeral was held Thursday at the Congregation Church, Rev. G.W. Longenecker officiating.
